Below see the "Meet Our Teachers" article for Mrs. Johnson, seventh grade teacher and math teacher for grades 5-8. Mrs. Johnson has been teaching for nearly 20 years, at St. Viator for the past 13.
Where did
you attend college?
I graduated from Loras College in
Dubuque with a degree in psychology. I then went on to Loyola University
to study education.
What is your favorite thing about
teaching?
I love that each day is different and that I can
control the amount of fun we have in the classroom. I enjoy games and
hands-on activities just as much as the kids. Our days fly by! The
students keep me young.
What do you like most about teaching
at St. Viator?
The students and families are wonderful at St.
Viator. Our students are kind and respectful. They love to learn and
are excited about school. I find the families to be supportive of our
efforts. I feel lucky to teach in a Catholic School where the Christian
values are highlighted in all we do.
What is your favorite
food?
I am a vegetarian working on becoming vegan so my tastes
have changed. Native Foods is my favorite restaurant because everything
they serve is vegan. I like to try new recipes at home and eat lots of
pasta and homemade pizza.
When is your
birthday?
November 27th
What is your
favorite drink to get your morning started?
One of my favorite
signs of spring is when places start carrying iced tea again. I love
unsweetened ice tea when the weather is nice.
Is there anything you can tell us about your
family or pets?
I have two cats named Petunia and Cocoa who alternate between paying together and chasing each other around the house!
Do you have any hobbies?
I like to read, do yoga, travel, and go on long walks.
What
is something you wish the parents of your students knew about
you?
Everything I do is in an effort to prepare the children to
succeed personally, spiritually, and academically. I want the students to
have a positive educational experience as much as the parents
do.
What is the most helpful thing a parent can do for
your class this year?
I try to send home websites that allow for
extra math practice. Students in grades 6-8 have a
Mathletics account which provides math practice online.
If parents have computer access it would be great to have the kids work on math
skills, especially if there is no written assignment.
What
professional accomplishments are you most proud of?
I received the Distinguished Graduate Award from St. Cyprian School where I went to
elementary school and taught for many years. While at St.
Viator I received a Heart of the School award from the Archdiocese of
Chicago. Both were important because they recognized my teaching ability
and my dedication to Catholic education.
If you weren't a
teacher, what profession would you choose?
I would work with animals in an environment that allowed me to be outside more and enjoy
nature.
Who are your heroes?
I have many people who I would call heroes for many different reasons: my
husband, my parents, my nephew, and my first
principal.
